Veria is a city of 60000 inhabitants situated in the north of Greece near Thessaloniki.  Veria is called a Byzantine city because of the numerous byzantine churches that are well preserved and worthwhile visiting.
The city is known since ancient times as it was a very important place for ancient Makedonians who were a greek tribe. King Philip ( father of Alexander the Great) had built one of the Makedonian capitals, Aiges, close to modern city of Veria. In Vergina, a modern village, the archaeologist, called M.Andronikos, excavated the royal tomb of king Philip and people from all over the world come to admire the unplundered tomb of the famous commander and see the golden treasures found in the tomb.
St Paul visited Veria and preached to the inhabitants. The people of the city were among the first Christians of the Roman Empire. Tourists , nowadays, come to visit the step where st Paul , the apostole of the nations, stood and preached Christianity.
Veria was a center of Greek culture and learning during Byzantine and Ottoman times. Today Veria is a commercial center of Central Macedonia, the capital of the regional unit of Imathia.
